Some of the best mornings at Furaha begin with an early tee time. You can be on the first fairway before the day warms up, and back at the lodge for a late breakfast in the garden. That's the quiet luxury of Observatory: the golf is genuinely on your doorstep.
One of Joburg's oldest clubs
Observatory Golf Club dates to the early twentieth century, which makes it one of the oldest clubs in Johannesburg. It grew up with the suburb, on the same high ridge that gives Observatory its name and its views. There's a certain character to a course with that much history — established trees, a settled layout, and the unhurried feel of a club that locals have played for generations.
The course on the ridge
The course makes the most of its position. Set among mature trees on rolling, elevated ground, it's a walkable layout with ridge breezes and long looks over the eastern suburbs. It rewards placement over pure power — a thinking round rather than a bombing one. On the highveld, remember the altitude: the ball carries noticeably further up here than at the coast, so club down accordingly.
Playing as a visitor
Visitors are welcome. A few practical notes:
- Book ahead. Reserve a tee time in advance, particularly for weekends and public holidays.
- Green fees & carts. Confirm current visitor green fees, cart and caddie availability with the pro shop when you book.
- Dress code. Standard golf attire — a collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers and golf shoes.
- Arrive early. Give yourself time to check in, warm up and pick up anything you've left behind.
If it's easier, tell us when you'd like to play and we'll help arrange the round from the lodge.
From Furaha to the first tee
It's roughly ten minutes by car from our garden wall to the club — one of the shortest commutes to a first tee you'll find in Johannesburg. Guests often play a morning round, come back for lunch, and spend the afternoon by the pool. For more on the neighbourhood around both, see our guide to things to do in Observatory.
The best time to play
Highveld mornings are the sweet spot — still air, soft light and cooler temperatures before the afternoon heat (and, in summer, the chance of a late-day thunderstorm). Winter days are crisp, sunny and dry, which many visitors find perfect. Whenever you go, an early tee time is the one to want.
