Johannesburg's great luxury is how quickly it lets you leave it. Point the car north-west and within an hour the highveld opens into the Magaliesberg — one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, all quartzite ridges, kloofs and big skies. It makes for the perfect day trip from Furaha: gone after breakfast, home for dinner.
The mountains
The Magaliesberg proper is a long, low range of ancient rock, threaded with hiking trails, waterfalls and shaded kloofs. There are gentle walks for an easy morning and longer routes for the keen; several reserves and private trails offer day access. Take water, a hat and good shoes — the highveld sun is stronger than it feels.
Hartbeespoort Dam
At the range's western end, "Harties" is the region's easy pleasure — a big dam ringed by the mountains, with a cableway up to the ridge for the view, lakeside restaurants, boat cruises and weekend markets. It's the relaxed, family-friendly way to spend the day if you'd rather not lace up boots.
The Cradle of Humankind
On the way, or as a day of its own, the Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the richest hominin fossil areas on the planet. The Maropeng visitor centre and the Sterkfontein Caves turn deep human history into a genuinely absorbing half-day — a reminder of just how old this landscape is.
Making a day of it
A few notes to keep it easy:
- Distance: roughly an hour to ninety minutes each way from Observatory, depending on your destination.
- Pick one or two. The area offers more than a day holds — better to do a little well than rush it all.
- Leave early. A morning start beats the traffic and gives you the cool of the day for walking.
- Book ahead for the cableway, cave tours or a popular lunch spot on weekends.
